"Neurological decision"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital / Neurology Department, Neurophysiology Outpatients & Ward 6B

(as the patient),

I was in hospital after completing a step-up step-down clinic in Albany.

Recently, I had a seizure after being diagnosed with FND about a month before. I had a 30 minute consultation with a neurologist in Fiona Stanley Hospital after having a seizure and extensive tests which showed nothing.

Then while in hospital recently, a psychiatrist and neurologist decided to take my license off me with no consultation with me.

Shouldn't proper patient care include the patient?

I tried to ring Fiona Stanley to talk to a Dr with regards to what happened, and no one would talk to me.

I have had no follow-up discussions after the diagnosis. Nothing. Then a major decision affecting my life is made with no consultation with me.

I feel this is not appropriate patient care.

I understand the decision, but I feel I should have been consulted.

To just be told a Dr won't be available to talk to me, how rude and inappropriate in my opinion.

Dear Sherbert,

I am sorry to read of your FND diagnosis and the recent suspension of your drivers’ licence. I understand that losing your drivers’ licence would have a huge impact on many aspects of your life. Without knowing your name and thus full details of your care it is hard to comment, however often the suspension of licences following a seizure is mandatory.

Having said that, although the mandatory suspension of a licence would not require consultation / your consent, the decision certainly should have been communicated to you in an open manner and you should have been provided the opportunity to ask any questions you may have had. I am sorry that this did not occur.

I have spoken with the Neurology team and asked that a Neurologist contact you to discuss your care and treatment plan, including the suspension of your licence. Can you please contact our Patient and Family Liaison Service (6152 4013) who will provide your name and contact details to the Neurology team?

Kind regards,

Neil Doverty
