"Child health superstar"

About: Kimberley Population Health Unit

(as the patient),

We are a family from Broome who had our first baby in Perth earlier this year.

As part of our routine care, we were visited by Kerryn, the child health nurse who is a Ngala CHN employed to see all regional patients who birth in Perth.

Kerryn was an exceptional CHN and I feel very lucky that we received care from her.

She was kind, compassionate and caring. Her knowledge and clinical skills were excellent. She had a high level of attention to detail and was very thorough with all aspect of care for my baby and I.

There was one issue that required follow up and she went above and beyond to seek out expert opinions (including from the lead paediatrician at a Perth hospital) to reassure us as new parents.

Kerryn - thank you, we are so grateful. We were so lucky to have met you and to have felt really cared for by you.

The only point that I feel needs addressing is that it seems that none of the care providers in Broome know about Kerryn’s role. There is an opportunity for families to be linked in with Kerryn during the antenatal period but it’s not until after the birth we knew of her role. Perhaps raising awareness of her role with care providers referring to Perth could add to the positive work I believe she is already doing for regional families. I know for some, having a familiar face/voice after the birth would be very reassuring.

Dear cricketb63,

We are pleased to hear of the positive experience you received from Kerryn, Ngala CHN for regional families. Thank you for highlighting the opportunity to connect teams in Broome and the Kimberley region more broadly about specialist roles in Perth. It is a timely reminder for greater collaboration between metropolitan and regional health care teams.

From your feedback we will communicate with our team to advise them of the roles in Perth for child and maternal health care, specifically Kerryn’s valuable role.

If you would like to discuss this further please be in contact with Jen Leahy Coordinator of Population Health on 91941607.

Thank you for your feedback, we wish you all the best.
