"Rash care"

About: Sale Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

I attended Sale emergency department with my child blowing up in a full body rash, infection behind their ear (it seemed a serious infection), fevers and not eating/drinking regularly. We had to attend the screening out the front where I was told we were not allowed to enter the building as we needed an isolation room? I was never given a reason behind this. We were asked by 2 people if we did a RAT test and I told them my entire household did them yesterday and we were clear. I asked them if I could sit in the car instead of outside in cold weather with my other toddler child. They hesitated but I told them I wasn’t making my child sit in the cold when they weren’t allowed inside for still an unknown reason, we sat in the car for about 2 hours, after we received a call that we were next in so we proceeded to the entrance where we sat for another hour!

I still had not been approached by anyone, not one person had been out to look at my child, look at their ear, check on them. I then went to the window and told them I was going to take my child home as it was getting way too cold for them. They told me to wait 1 second and check so I did. Another clinician (who I have had many of issues with in emergency due to their absolute rudeness and no care for any patient in my opinion, I feel they are that loud in there that nothing is confidential) where they yelled at me from the window to come to them and asked me why I was there, me baffled and confused assuming they would have done their job and read the notes when we first came here. I told them, they then said so is my child on antibiotics? And I replied well why do they think we’re here? I recall they then proceeded to yell at me about the room and having no bed and how other people need treatment first, I continued to explain that I know people may come in and need treatment first but for a toddler to be outside for this extended time in the cold and no one checking on them, I felt was a joke. I then explained it was wrong as they are still a patient and needs care. The clinician still continued to yell at me and use an excuse that they had only just come on. If that was the case, I wondered why would they willingly put their hand up to come and confront me without the intention of being rude and abrupt! I told them that I would like my child off the list and walked away.

I do not for the life of me know how Sale emergency department seems to be continuing to go downhill with no care at all for patients and how this clinician still to this day has a job there where I hear them spoken about around the town about their manner in there and I believe everyone gets the same service from them. Appalled and now, at the time of writing this, I have a toddler at home who needs to wait an extended time to get medication to help them.

Dear elephantsp88,

Thank you for posting your story about your experience with your child at the Sale Hospital Emergency Department. At the outset let me offer our apologies in regard to what you described. The type of communication and interaction you describe is clearly not what we expect of our team in terms of care and communication.

We are keen to be able to investigate this matter fully to understand what occurred. To that end, if you were willing to provide us with your name and contact details we can get in touch and discuss this matter fully. We are commencing a programme aimed at improving care at Sale Hospital. Your story and experience will be valuable in the work we will be doing with our ED team.
