"Misdiagnosed broken foot"

About: Kalgoorlie Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I went to Kalgoorlie hospital after my foot was run over.

They did an X-ray and said there were no broken bones and that I just needed to go home and rest for three days.

My partner has a medical background and knew something wasn’t right as I was still in a lot of pain.

They asked for an MRI to be done.

The Dr refused and said there were no breaks seen on the X-ray. My partner refused to take no for an answer, the Head of the Department, came in said there was nothing wrong with me and that I would not be getting any further medical treatment. My partner again disagreed with the diagnosis and asked for more medical imaging. The Head of the Department then said it would not change the care I received and that the X-ray showed no broken bones. They then sent a surgeon down to speak to me to, I feel, try and convince me I had nothing wrong as the X-ray showed no broken bones.

Again my partner spoke up and raised concerns about my foot. I was told no further medical imaging was necessary and if I wanted to I could follow up with my GP later in the week to get a referral for an MRI. My partner told the Head of the Department again we wanted further investigations.

The Dr then finally agreed that I would get a CT scan but again insisted there was nothing wrong with me. In my opinion, three Drs tried to intimidate us and kept saying there was nothing wrong.

They then said the ED was busy and that the beds were needed so I would have to wait in the waiting room (both beds next to me were vacant and the waiting area had two people waiting at this point).

I went in for a scan and 6 hours later another Dr came in and told me I had broken bone fragments and other damage to my foot.

I had no apology from the hospital and if it wasn’t for my partner I would have had medical attention delayed.

I flew to Perth two days later and saw a specialist who saw me straight away, I ended up with three ruptured ligaments and three broken bones in my foot and had surgery to have a plate inserted.

I am disgusted with the treatment I received from the hospital and if it wasn’t for my partner, I believe would have been sent back to work three days later.

In my opinion, there is gross negligence on the Drs' behalf. I feel I was constantly treated as if I was faking and that there was nothing wrong. I believe the Drs tried to not only intimidate me but also my partner.

The hospital and Drs have a duty of care and in my opinion, failed to provide the fair treatment I deserved.

Dear matarfr33,

Thank you for sharing your story with us after attending the Kalgoorlie Hospital Emergency Department and bringing your concerns to my attention. I can only imagine the discomfort you felt having such a painful injury and how upset you must both be from the inadequate care you received during your time in the Kalgoorlie Hospital Emergency Department.

We do stress to our doctors that they involve patients and their carers in their decision making particularly when there is heightened concern. From your story I can see that on this occasion this did not occur and for that I apologise.

As Care Opinion is an anonymous platform for our consumers to share their experiences, we do not have the information required to review your care at this time. If you feel comfortable to do so, I encourage you to contact Dr Sankha Mitra, Goldfields Regional Director of Medical Services on 0417 992 147 or via email Sankha.Mitra@health.wa.gov.au. Sankha will be able to facilitate a full review of your care and discuss any of the issues you have raised further. Sankha will be more than happy to talk with you and would welcome your call.

I would also like to let you know about an escalation process we have in place at the Kalgoorlie Health Campus (KHC) that supports patients and their families and carers to call for assistance if they feel that their or their loved one’s healthcare concerns are not being addressed. This process is called Aishwarya’s CARE Call and it enables you to speak to a senior member of staff who will listen to your concerns and help you or your loved one.

Information about Aishwarya’s CARE Call is now in place throughout the waiting room areas in the KHC so that people are aware of the process. If you are concerned about the care you receive in hospital in the future, I encourage you to make a CARE Call on (08) 9080 5781.

Thank you again for your feedback, as this provides us with an opportunity to improve our patient experience and improve our clinicians' practice overall. I hope that you are recovering well from your surgery.

Kind regards,

Ron Wynn
