"Give people a compression stocking"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital / Orthopaedics & Ward 4A

(as the patient),

Broken ankle. Cam boot versus compression stocking. Hmmm.

No one including the Dr mentioned getting a compression stocking for swelling, even after I asked.

I feel a cam boot is useless for swelling. I would have rather been given compression stockings. I went through 2 weeks of hell because the Dr said walking in the Cam boot will pump the blood away from the foot. In my opinion, crap. I bought medical grade compression stockings from the chemist after doing my own damn research and hey presto! A week later; Swelling is 70% reduced baby! I'm using a pair of UGG boots and compression stocking at home, the Cam boot out of home with the compression stocking, nothing when sleeping and I now have no pain and increased flexibility. I'm exercising the foot, no painkillers at all.

Dear guideej79,

I’m sorry to read that you broke your ankle, but happy to read that you now have no pain and your flexibility is improving.

I referred your Care Opinion to our Orthopaedic Consultants for comment, however without knowing the specific details of your history, injury or treatment/procedure they were unable to provide comment regarding the decision to prescribe a camboot. It may have been advantageous for many reasons. If you would like to discuss the clinical rationale behind your specific case I encourage you to contact your treating team.

I do wish you all the best in your ongoing recovery – it sounds like you are a model patient keen to rehabilitate and get back to pre-injury status quo ASAP – well done.

Regards,

Neil Doverty
