"Mental Health experience and admission"

About: Kalgoorlie Health Campus / Emergency Department Kalgoorlie Mental Health Inpatient Service

(as the patient),

Admitted to hospital, suicidal. I felt the clinician in Emergency was extremely cold and gave me sedative, script & Drs Cert. & sent me on my way, despite my work colleague explaining the situation. On getting back to work & giving paperwork to boss, realised neither the script or Drs Cert were even for me.

On 2nd hospital attendance & complaint, I was admitted. Been on a waitlist to see a psychologist since the end of 2021 to now. Seeking help & not being able to get it contributed to the frustration, exhaustion and giving up. So being sent home was less than ideal.

I feel very angry. However, once admitted and moved the staff on the ward who I dealt with were lovely.

Dear Itchyfeet

Thank you for taking the time to share your story about your recent experience at the Kalgoorlie Hospital Emergency Department (ED). I am sorry to hear that you felt the ED clinician was cold and did not listen to your concerns, and I am concerned that you were given the wrong script and medical certificate, this is unsatisfactory. I encourage you to contact Alicia Michalanney, Director of the Kalgoorlie Health Campus on 9080 5817 or via email Alicia.Michalanney@health.wa.gov.au. Alicia will be able to look into the this further for you and would welcome hearing from you.

It is certainly frustrating when you cannot access the help you seek. If you are not able to see a psychologist in Kalgoorlie, it may be possible to find a suitable service online, if you have access to the Internet.

It is pleasing to hear that your experience with staff on the ward was positive. I wish you well in your recovery journey and thank you for taking the time to tell us of your experiences.

Kind regards

Peter Tredinnick
