"Incredible care for a fin chop to the head"

About: Busselton Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

Our story started on the beach. My son's surfboard must've been upset with him and attacked him - fin chop to the head. Needless to say he not only attracted all the teenage girls out the water (little bit of a drastic way of getting attention) but also the attention of ER nurse Christa who thought she was coming to the beach for a beautiful sunset and to watch her daughter’s surf. Instead the incredible lady, very calmly took over (from us clearly panicked and tragically incompetent mums and dad). She gave my son professional first aid response and very good guidance to us parents. So calm so measured, clearly an angel in my opinion. We were somewhere between shoving a sand filled towel on the child’s cracked head, puking over the blood - I would have driven to Perth, and others wanted to call an ambo (there was blood dripping over his whole face). Christa (think that’s how you spell it, sorry if I’m wrong), changed our 'dressing' with clean and well applied make do - sarong dressing. She reassured my son, all of us adults, took incredible care of him and sent us to ER Busso. Our angel.

Our luck in Busso continued.

Checking into ER is always a long tedious near painful process for me. In Busso, literally every nurse we encountered could not have been nicer.

Then we went inside and met Dr Anne. Angel number 2 for the evening! Anne told us stories about crocs in the Kimberly, sharks and other fin wounds, she made us laugh and calmed us down. Such good bedside manner I felt. She calmly stitched up my son. Not really knowing good from bad stitches, we were very happy with our encounter/experience with Dr Anne. But then recently, we got the stitches out. All smiles as the doctor and nurse who took them out kept raving about the good job Dr Anne did. Being that my son is a teenager. I was really nervous he would have a bad stitches job done. But I felt we very much lucked out!

Extremely brilliant first response from nurse Krista on the beach and then a very steady, experienced and good hand from Dr Anne!

Great ambassadors for Busso Health Campus and ER and for regional WA health!

Thank you to all involved for all showing us such love, kindness and highly skilled service. They all deserve huge congratulations and hugs.

Anne and krista - you helped a teenager have a scar which “chicks can dig”/“to be proud of” and not have a complex about for the rest of his life with your quick thinking and finely tuned skills. It wasn’t life threatening- but with a mum who would’ve walked him up the steep shallows path and then driven him to Perth with a sandy towel stuck to his head…I believe things could have looked and been a whole lot worse.

Thanks ladies, from mum and son.

Hi Fin chop grom,

We were very happy to hear your positive feedback after the horrible accident your son had whilst surfing. Your account of your story made me laugh as you wrote it in a very amusing way. The nurse you met was Kristen and she will be delighted that she could be of assistance in your time of need. She has two daughters who surf very well and has probably seen many accidents like the one your son suffered. I do hope he has recovered well and has had no after-effects.

I have passed on your thanks to both Kristen and Ann. Ann is also a very experienced Dr who has worked up north for many years, hence her stories about crocs!

It is so kind of you to take the time to write and I know that it means so much to the staff when they hear positive feedback. I will print your letter and put it in the tearoom for all to see, it certainly helps lift morale. We are incredibly lucky in Busselton to have a wonderful team that really work well together and I am so glad your experience was so positive.

Yours sincerely,

Caroline Booker
