"My husband’s care"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital / Urology

(as a relative),

What a wonderful team of nurses and the urology medical team . My husband had a nephrectomy for renal cancer last year. He had a few nights in ICU and was quite delirious. He was transferred to Ward 6 A post ICU.

I found the nurses on 6 A were amazing. They treated him with dignity, compassion and competence. We both felt very safe on the ward. My husband had access to his phone and could ring me to be re-orientated . I sent him pictures of me and our house and he easily settled. He said the delirium was the most frightening experience of his life. The lack of sleep in ICU and pain medications made him feel he was in a strange place and he knew nobody and would never come home.

The Urology team were open and honest and explained the operation, the stay in ICU and listened. He was also changed from Tramadol to another pain killer. I should add the surgeon had rung us at home the day before the operation to ask if we had questions.

My husband had another admission to this ward and once again his care was amazing.

It was a team approach. It seemed staff were kind to students, junior staff and overall I felt there was a palpable safety culture.

I recall the ward was often extremely busy. The nurses were always calm, kind and paid attention to detail.

I believe the care factor and adopting a person centred approach were just of the key factors for the best possible outcomes for my husband. There was attention to detail, good hand washing and aseptic technique prevented any infections.

Thank you.

Dear Thankyou 6 A,

Thank you for sharing your husband’s positive experience with our Urology team. Of course I wholeheartedly agree with you – our Urology Service, led by Professor Dickon Hayne, is everything you have described and more. Only yesterday I had the pleasure of hearing about all of the research this team are doing at a local, national and international level!

I have shared your feedback with the team and echo your gratitude.

Thank you again for sharing such heartfelt feedback, and I hope that your husband is recovering well.

Kind regards,

Neil Doverty
