"Dental surgery"

About: Swan Hill District Health Dental Service

(as a service user),

I went in for dental surgery and ended up not having the actual dental procedure I needed, fillings were done but I believe the tooth I needed removed was still there, I ended up having a terrible experience with the nasal tube damaging my inside of my nose because I had a small air way. It ended up bleeding continuously and then a trip to emergency to get a rhinoplasty inserted to stop the bleeding which was so excruciatingly painful, removal the next day was also very painful, my throat also sustained injuries which resulted in extremely painful ulcers redness and bruising to the back of my throat. Which I was on antibiotics, 4 days after the procedure I still couldn’t swallow properly or even eat properly due to the swelling in my throat.

Dear foxtrotgt76,

Thank you for your feedback regarding your recent dental treatment under anaesthetic.

Unfortunately it is a very common, but unwanted complication, for the nose to bleed post nasal intubation and I am sorry to hear your bleeding continued after discharge and caused you pain and discomfort. I will provide feedback to our anaesthetist group regarding your case. Could you please let me know if the risks of pain in nose and throat and nasal bleeding were explained to you at some stage prior to surgery, as this will assist us in providing optimal care to others in your situation.

Hopefully you are recovering well and have been in contact with your dentist for further advice. Should you want to discuss further please contact me at dhartland@shdh.org.au.

Regards,

Donna

Hi Donna

It was explained that a nose tube would be in place. It was explained that some bleeding could occur but I didn’t think it would be to the extent that I needed to come back into emergency later that night as bleeding would not stop, then a rhino plasty inserted in my nose which a very painful experience

I didn’t think I’d have any issues as I had a surgery on Bendigo 8 weeks ago for a different medical procedure and had no complications with tubes whilst under anaesthetic.

I have had a CT as the nose and sinus area is still very sore, I had an ENT appointment also which explained that I did have a deviated septum but the injury from the tube has worsened that area and it’s extremely inflamed.
