Following an emergency admission to another hospital and a shock diagnosis of uterine cancer, a friend and colleague arranged for a transfer to the RHW. He rightfully believed I needed ‘to come home and get the help I need’ (I am staff at the Randwick Campus).
I was admitted to Macquarie ward, and despite the initial chaos, I knew I was going to be well cared for.
Firstly I’d like to mention how amazing I found the nurses are there. They were the definition of awesome. I could not have coped as well as I have without them. Every hand hold, midnight counselling session, early morning cup of tea, celebration of my frankly mediocre achievements and encouragement of my failures were gratefully appreciated. I found Macquarie ward was a safe space, if I could bottle the magic from the atmosphere of the ward and sell it, I would be a millionaire. The next people I’d like to mention are the psychologist and social work dept. The assistance with financial concerns were beyond reassuring, knowing that there were options open to me in order for me to recover and not rush back to work. The psychologist was unobtrusive but essential to my recovery. She allowed me to express my deepest, darkest thought and gave me the tools to deal with what was going on.
Finally I’d like to talk about the Gynae-Oncology doctors, Anaesthetists and theatre staff. I feel Dr Wan and his team are the most incredible people. From the very first meeting with each member of the team I was put at ease. It’s clear to me that like attracts like, I believe Dr Wan is the best and has finest of the fine in his team.
The Royal hospital for Women, and the team on Macquarie ward in particular has legitimately saved my life, I will be forever grateful.
