"First time parents"

About: Broome Health Campus / Maternity/Midwifery

(as the patient),

Recently I was admitted to Broome Health Campus for monitoring of my unborn baby due to decreased movements which was then related to drops in babies heart rate. I was admitted for continuous monitoring until baby was born. After a one night stay (at 36 weeks) I was taken to theatre for an emergency c-section due to changes in his heart rate. During this time I was very nervous; but I felt all the medical staff, including nursing remained calm and reassured me the whole time. Soon after our beautiful baby boy was born at 36 weeks. I cannot fault the amazing midwife team that attended to me at Broome - from every shift everyone was so lovely and helpful, nothing ever was a bother for them...even at 3am in the morning.

The obstetric medical team were fantastic and always explained everything clearly, ensuring our questions did not go unanswered. The kitchen staff were also fabulous- ensuring I was well looked after. We our now home with our little one - enjoying life as a family of three.

The MGP team (Deb, Yvonne and Beck) have been fantastic for the home visit post-natal care. They all provided their expert advice but I felt Beck went above and beyond with her little tips and tricks into motherhood, which definitely helped at times of doubt (damn hormones).

My only downfall would be not allowing my partner to stay overnight after birth on the first night. This was a very traumatic time for us both. Bub was taken off to SCN and was not brought to me for a couple of hours afterwards. Due to my partner not being able to stay the night (birth was close to 10pm) we were unable to share that moment together of me meeting my son for the first time. Whilst my partner was allowed to be with him in SCN whilst staff were with bub, my partner had also not held him yet. As first time parents and the uncertainty over a couple of days after delivery, this was quite upsetting for us both.

Thank you to the Broome Health Campus Maternity Team - you are all amazing!

Dear gammayf74

Thank you for taking the time to post your story on Care Opinion and congratulations on the birth of your first baby. I am so sorry that you didn’t experience meeting your son together. We are challenged in our unit, from a space perspective, which makes having partners stay overnight difficult. COVID has also provided challenges to our visitor numbers and length of stay. Being separated from a newborn, quite understandably, can be upsetting. Certainly allowances can be made under certain circumstances and I will discuss this with our team, to ensure where possible, parents both enjoy meeting their child together for the first time.

I would also like to say thank you for acknowledging our wonderful team of midwives and medical staff. They are an incredible crew to work with and treat every new parent as an individual providing 24 hour exceptional care. I will certainly pass on your “Opinion” to the maternity team.

Being first time parents is such an exciting time and I wish you well on your journey of parenthood. If you would like to discuss your situation further, to assist us to take better care of parents separated from their babies in those early hours, please do so on 08 9194 2469.

Yours sincerely

Sally Clark
