"Emergency care"

About: Wonthaggi Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a friend),

My friend who is elderly was taken into ED with severe asthma and a very bad cold. I rang the hospital to see if they were staying. In my third phone call at night, I recall I was told by the nurse that they would ring me, so I kept my phone next to my bed and there was no phone call, I didn't receive one.

So the following morning I rang the hospital and was told that my friend was sent home about a couple hours before midnight. Why, I asked, surely they should have been kept in. I recall this happened to them a few months ago when they broke multiple ribs and it seemed to me you sent them home far far too early.

I know you are under the pump, more so nowadays than before but, in my opinion, we need to look after our elderly a bit better and sending my friend home in the middle of the night and it is freezing doesn't seem right to me.

Dear paprikatc46,

Thank you for taking the time to write on behalf of your friend. It is absolutely true that, like never before, we are under the pump - not enough staff and not enough beds and more patients and sicker patients. A perfect storm. Having said that, I know the nursing staff have been trying very hard to find ways to accommodate our older patients who are going home alone. I would be interested to talk to the staff to find out what happened with your friend - I'd be grateful if you would ring or text me (0472846355) your friends name and address so I can follow up. I'm sorry that your friend had this experience - please pass on my apologies and I hope they are ok.

Kind Regards, Jan
