"Care received"

About: Box Hill Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

Transferred via stretcher to ED.

Seemingly got left on the stretcher for almost 24 hours in a tent outside the hospital- freezing weather conditions.

I felt forced to sleep overnight in the freezing tent on a stretcher and I am still suffering pain from sleeping on it- I was admitted with back pain so staff knew this wasn't suitable for me. No toilets, no beds in the tent - why was I left in here, when it seemed clearly this isn't a ward room it is a triage area!

I felt left and forgotten. Never moved into the hospital – I felt I was treated like trash not being allowed to receive care inside the hospital. This experience has deeply affected me and will for a very long time to come.

Care by senior ED staff was, in my opinion, disgusting, degrading and despicable. It seemed to me the tent is clearly being abused and not used for its purpose.

I asked for a non-emergency ambulance to be booked – I recall a senior staff member threw a taxi voucher at me and I tried talking and begging them to book the ambulance – I believe their response was sarcastic. I will remember their apparent utter rudeness, they walked off midway while I was talking. What a horrific experience - being refused what I think is suitable transport home? I felt it was complete neglect!

Dear Deservebetter

Thank you for sharing your experience when attending the Emergency Department at Eastern Health's Box Hill Hospital. I'm sorry it wasn't a positive one and we did not meet expectations.

The staff in the Emergency Department have, and continue to work in very difficult circumstances with very high demand for care and service, including a high number of patients requiring inpatient care. I can assure you the staff would prefer not to use the marquee however they are forced to as there is often times when there is no room within the Emergency Department.

These challenging circumstances both you and the staff have and continue to deal with take their toll on all. My apologies the requests you made for assistance to get home added to a less than positive experience for you.

I will share your experience with the Emergency Department leadership team so they are aware and include in their thinking about ways to enhance a person's experience.

I trust you have received the treatment necessary to reduce your back pain.

Kind regards

David
