"Superb treatment of visiting family"

About: Kalamunda Hospital

(as a carer),

On our first visit to Kalamunda Hospital recently, we were welcomed by a staff member who took us through the current procedures of the hospital including visiting hours and COVID testing.

This staff member was so caring and respectful not to mention their sense of humour, that it made all of us feel very comfortable that our parent was in this hospital, if this is the first initial experience you receive at the front door. I was shocked to learn that as I understand it, this staff member's employment is to cease in approximately one months time due to staff cuts! I can't imagine how an already seemingly understaffed health system can, in my opinion, just cast these very experienced people to one side and expect things to improve? Seriously, I believe this has become an absolute joke to remove these people from employment when they seem to carry all the necessary skills to interact with all ages and genders without prejudice.

I feel that this government can boast about such a huge surplus then retire people that based on my experience, are more than just needed they are in fact essential to fixing what I see as the overall problems that are now experienced all over WA with the health care system.

As a taxpayer, I would rather see people like this staff member retain their position, people, who not only has the experience to communicate, but also gives them that feeling that you look forward to starting your experience at such places of care.  Please consider this carefully as once these people are removed, I feel the experience is lost. I am also a business owner and I know that trying to replace people with this type of experience is almost impossible, not to mention the work ethic that they bring with them.

Dear Stig,

Thank you for taking the time to share your story regarding your first visit to Kalamunda Hospital. I was very pleased to read that you were made to feel comfortable regarding your parent being at Kalamunda Hospital during your visit as a direct result of the actions of the staff member who greeted you. I have shared with the team your story and wonderful compliments and gratitude for the caring, respectful communication that you received on your arrival from the staff member, and of course your compliments on their wonderful sense of humour! I know the team will appreciate your lovely feedback and recognition of the support that this staff member provides on a daily basis for all visitors to the service.

I am truly proud of all of our staff at Kalamunda Hospital and the tremendous job they have all done in the face of the challenges the COVID-19 pandemic has provided to them.
