"Disappointed in my ED visit to the hospital"

About: Kalgoorlie Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I attended Kalgoorlie Regional Hospital recently with escalating symptoms at the advice of my GP. The ED doctor immediately told me it’s not their job to care for my complaint. I felt the doctor spoke over me, misunderstanding my complaint and wouldn’t let me speak.

It seemed to me that the doctor refused to allow me to speak to the relevant department regarding my concern stating they were too busy, ignored my pleas regarding the escalating symptoms and told me to just wait until I got an appointment or something happened, such as bleeding heavily.

I am autistic and began to have a meltdown and panic attack whilst trying to explain my fears, anxiety and increasing symptoms/decreasing quality of life. I thought the doctor just looked over me refusing to listen until I left.  The doctor did have the courtesy of printing my scan results, but told me if I wanted timely care Perth is the place to be. The doctor then seemed to backtrack on this when I said ‘fine I’ll go to Perth then’.

I think that if anyone else had been in the department with a foreign object lodged in their body causing decreasing quality of life it would have been removed, as that is the job of a doctor.

As a disabled person, I feel my decreasing quality of life was ignored.

I’m horrified that a doctor within the emergency department seemed so callous and seemed to have such little care that they would declare this is not their job and seem to refuse to assist further in referring, placing all the onus on me to make multiple phone calls. I was already following medical advice for chain of escalation.

I’m sick of what I believe to be buck passing in our regional hospitals. I think something needs to change immediately before someone dies. I’m now left waiting for an appointment and then further follow up for removal which could be weeks to months away unable to partake in normal daily activities.

Dear mercurypy47

Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your recent experience at the Kalgoorlie Health Campus. I am sorry that you felt ignored by the doctor in the Emergency Department and that this resulted in you feeling anxious and fearful. I will ensure that the staff are reminded of the importance of clear communication and ensuring they listen to our patients to determine their needs, on each and every presentation.

I would like to let you know about an escalation process we have in place at the Kalgoorlie Health Campus (KHC) that supports patients and their families and carers to call for assistance if they feel that their or their loved one’s healthcare concerns are not being addressed appropriately. This process is called Aishwarya’s CARE Call and it enables you to speak to a senior member of staff who will listen to your concerns and help you or your loved one. Information about Aishwarya’s CARE Call is now in place throughout the KHC so that people are aware of the process. If you are concerned about the care you receive in hospital in the future, I encourage you to make a CARE Call on (08) 9080 5781.

I hope that you have now an appointment for the follow up care that you need from the right health professional. Should you wish to discuss this matter in further detail, then please don’t hesitate to contact Alicia Michalanney, Director of the Kalgoorlie Health Campus on 9080 5817 or via email Alicia.Michalanney@health.wa.gov.au.

Kind regards
