I presented to Bunbury Emergency Department early afternoon recently with severe pain to abdomen. Bloods done and later informed I had a mild case of pancreatitis.
That evening, I was taken to the Bunbury Regional Hospital surgical ward. I did not understand why I was admitted to the Public Hospital and not the Private Hospital which I have paid cover for for many years. I was placed in a room with apparent mold on the air conditioning vents. I believe there was also mold in the bathroom. The shower head was broken and was continuously dripping water. In my opinion, one wall in the room looked like a patchwork quilt with what I felt was minimal maintenance done to cover the gouges and peeling pain. Frankly I felt it was disgusting!
Later that evening I was told I would be fasting for an ultrasound the next morning.
The next day, the doctors (and trainees) visited me in my room, treating me, I thought, disdainfully and informing me my ultrasound would be at midday. This meant I had been fasting for 18 hours. I was told I am to be on a low fat diet. No other information!
Another visit from a doctor, who I felt, treated me like a drunk, even asking me if I went to a party or something, and I feel, implied I went on a bender. I was told to treat food and drinks like an allergy! Again, I received no information about my condition. I was and still am horrified with the way I was treated by the doctor.
After reading my discharge paperwork (which was mailed to me from the hospital as I was not discharged according to normal procedure) it seems to me that I was practically treated as an alcoholic with acute pancreatitis. The discharge summary also states what I believe to be incorrect information and I now understand why I think I was treated, frankly, like rubbish!
Since my discharge from Hospital I have had to do my own research and found out some interesting facts about my diagnosis. There are multiple contributing factors yet, I think, these presumptuous doctors did not consider them nor did they ask me in reference to them.
Also noted during my stay there was no jug of water, so when given pain killers on many occasions I had to get the little glass that I had, filled by the nurses. I found it hilarious that I couldn’t get a jug for water yet there’s the showerhead in the bathroom dripping liters of water away every hour.
"Horrified by my treatment and care I received"
