"Delay in scan"

About: Prince of Wales Hospital / Medical Imaging Department

(as a carer),

My partner was an inpatient in Prince of Wales Hospital. They are in pain most of the time. My partner was due to have a CT scan to see how far tumours had spread. Intended time for scan was supposed to be around early afternoon. They were given pain relief at that time but radiography dept was running behind. The scan was not until around the evening. It seemed the pain relief was no longer working. Radiography people did not apparently call the ward or a doctor when my partner was screaming in pain nor did they stop the scan. My partner was crying for hours afterwards from the pain and the experience. They have cried more recently than they have in the last many years. Rubbish treatment, in my opinion.

Dear virgost88,

I am very grateful you have shared your story with us via Care Opinion Australia as this is a very distressing account of your partner’s CT scan. I am so very sorry that a delay in the scan being held resulted in the pain not being managed appropriately.

Please be assured that I have shared your story with our Leadership Team to provide the opportunity to learn from your experience and discuss what steps could be taken to ensure this situation does not happen again, and that pain is managed appropriately regardless of any delays.

While it is important to ensure better experiences for future patients, I am very concerned that your partner has been left so distressed and I am keen to work this through with them. If you or your partner are willing, I invite you to contact me via email to powmi@health.nsw.gov.au so we can speak further about this.

Kind regards,

Inge Vuuregge
