"Unprofessional phone call"

About: Albany Health Campus / Cancer Services

(as the patient),

A senior clinician rang me from the Albany health campus, however there was another person also taking to me as well, so there were two people talking in tandem, sometimes at the same time, to me. I was put on loud speaker. I felt like was being badgered, too much information at one time. I ended up getting so stressed.

I asked to speak to my McGrath breast care nurse. The reply was that they were unavailable today. I recall the senior clinician said that I was taking up space (chair) in the chemo ward, then proceeded to tell me that I now had a new appointment date with another service provider. I understand they had not discussed anything with my McGrath breast care nurse prior to the phone call either. I am currently receiving breast cancer treatment.

If the senior clinician had of thought to speak to my McGarth breast cancer nurse in the beginning, I believe I would not have been subjected to the stress and the overall worry that this, I feel, unnecessary phone call caused me. I believe I know my breast care nurse would have approached me directly with a high professional standard/empathy and compassion to address this situation. I  have the highest regard for the nurses that I have encountered, that administer chemotherapy at the Albany heath campus.

Dear ariesfq94

I am very sorry that it you experienced a stressful telephone consultation by senior clinicians. I understand your felt overwhelmed by the information given to you and we should have involved your McGrath breast care nurse for a more thorough approach to your cancer treatment. I apologise that this conversation has caused you stress and worry.

I would like to understand what happened to you and hopefully prevent similar communication issues for others. If you would like me to investigate exactly what has occurred please contact the Albany Health Campus Operations team on 9892 2213 so that we can review your medical record.

Yours sincerely

Janine Watts
