"Waste of time"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I woke up to a lot of pain and not being able to breathe properly due to my swollen tonsils, which I’ve had for about a month and the pain keeps getting worse.

I waited in ED for over 5 hours just to be seen by a consultant and being given the same antibiotics that I’d been on for the previous 3 weeks (which I explained to them that it hasn’t been working), and some painkillers, which I already have from my doctor. I felt the consultant showed no interest in what I had to say or how I was feeling and that I was in much pain.

My gp wrote a letter saying if they could do an x-ray to see if there’s an underlying problem to see why my throat isn’t getting better, and maybe do an IV drip antibiotics since my tonsils were so swollen and I couldn’t swallow. It seemed the consultant didn’t take any of that under consideration, and when I questioned it, I recall they said I’ll be fine and just keep taking the same antibiotics for another week.

What a waste of my time.

Dear watertf87

I am sorry to hear of the wait you experienced in our Emergency Department. All patients are seen in order of clinical priority, and we do have the busiest Emergency Department (ED) in WA, with well over 300 presentations every day. EDs are for emergencies, and whilst not knowing your specific case as Care Opinion is anonymous, your GP could perhaps have referred you for an xray in the community. If the antibiotics have not helped and your pain improved, I would suggest you return to your GP for further review. You can find information about your health care options here: Health care options. Please be assured that we are constantly working to improve access to our Emergency Department.

Kind regards,

Neil Doverty
