"COVID testing clinic"

About: Bunbury Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

So recently I took my teenage child for a pcr test at Bunbury Regional Hospital. Have been before and had great service. Ben or Deb who greet you and take your details are so lovely. Couldn’t be more helpful.

When going through to see the clinician, it wasn’t as good of an experience. It seemed they were entering some stuff in the computer and asked my teenager/me a question. As you know when someone is not facing you/with a mask on that’s easy to miss. Teenager looking on phone so clinician turned around, I believe in a rude manner, and said to get off their phone, it’s only 30 seconds of their life! Teenager puts phone down. Question was answered etc. Clinician then turns back to do a few other bits. Teenager's sibling sends a text of course (they were waiting outside). Teenager looks down at phone, when clinician turned back and seemed very annoyed said to get off their effing phone. I was very shocked.

As a fellow health care worker, I know this is not how you should speak or treat others. Have rang to speak to someone in regard to this but my call hasn’t been returned. I get that teenagers can be annoying on their phones, but I feel this was not ok.

Dear rainth53,

Thankyou for providing us with your feedback regarding the Bunbury Hospital Covid Clinic. I apologise that your experience with the clinic staff was not optimal and that you and your daughter felt uncomfortable and not acknowledged. At all times we are striving to ensure that all of our patients and their families feel acknowledged and respected and I am sorry that this was not your experience.

Whilst we appreciate that mask wearing can interfere with our clinical conversations, I will be sharing your experience with the team so that they can reflect on this for future conversations.

If you would like to discuss this further please reach out to me on 9722 1422. My name is Ceri and I am the A/Director of Nursing and Midwifery at Bunbury Hospital. I look forward to speaking with you.

Kind regards
Ceri Elliott
