"Obstetrics care and scans"

About: Broome Health Campus / Maternity/Midwifery Broome Health Campus / Medical Imaging

(as a service user),

My partner has been pregnant throughout the COVID pandemic and I feel as though there have been a lot of inconsistencies with rules.

I cannot commend the service enough, our midwife Jo has been amazing however when it comes to Radiology-ultrasound I feel there has been very poor communication about being allowed into the appointments or not. We have had recent appointments where I have been allowed in to attend, whereas with x-ray I am not allowed and this seems very inconsistent. I understand the rules and regulations but as a consumer I feel this is communicated very poorly.

To only find out on the day of the appointment that I am not allowed in is very distressing and I feel they are not taking into consideration the emotional wellbeing of the partner. As a same-sex couple it can be especially hard to feel connected to our unborn child and factors like missing scan makes has a huge impact and makes me feel as though I am not part of the process.

I am aware of other Mothers who have been allowed to have their partner in the appointment and after today have been informed you can apply for an exemption but we were too late to do so having only been informed after calling up to ask. In my opinion, this is poor communication and this process needs to be clearly explained to all patients at time of booking the appointment and offering individuals that they can apply for an exemption.

Dear eaglehy64,

Thank you for sharing your feedback about your experience when having an ultrasound.

First of all, congratulations on your pregnancy. I understand that you were disappointed and frustrated that you were unable to attend the ultrasound with your partner.

I am delighted to say, currently we are able to provide exemptions (as required) to allow partners in the ultrasound. This exemption process has now been streamlined to ease the process.

Like all public hospitals, we have had to follow the WA Health visitor guidelines directives. However we do very much empathise with all our patients not having partners for the ultrasounds.

I hope you get to enjoy your next scan with your partner.

Best regards
