"Hospital visit with newborn"

About: Albany Health Campus / Paediatrics

(as a parent/guardian),

Phoned a local hospital regarding newborn child with blood in nappy.

We were advised to drive around 1 1/2 hours to Albany Hospital as they had staff better placed to assist.

Triaged quickly, and assessed.

Paediatricians was called for consult.

We were advised to place baby on either Karicare or Nestle baby formula

We queried cow’s milk, soy or non dairy formula and was advised it didn't matter.

Paed thought the blood was due to protein in the dairy, and explained it was due to the way the mother’s body converted the dairy, therefore, didn't matter which formula was selected.

Blood continued in baby nappy resulting in parents visiting their local hospital, doctor who phoned a Paediatrician (in Perth?).

Mother was phoned and advised to place baby on Alfare prescription formula for allergies.

Doctor couldn't understand why mother was advised that the normal dairy formula would be adequate for this condition as prescribed in Albany Hospital.

2 days after baby commenced Alfare, blood stopped.

It seemed this could have been avoided, reducing discomfort to baby, and stress to parents of a first time child.

Pead from Albany Hospital called back 2 days later to advise that the stool came back clear, and checked up on baby.

Having visited a different hospital we were advised that the stool MCS returned positive c diff toxin PCR on one test, negative on further test.
