"Wait times"

About: Joondalup Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as a carer),

My elderly parent-in-law was taken by ambulance to Joondalup ED, I arrived believing they would be in ED itself. I was in the waiting room when I saw them sitting in a wheelchair in the general ED waiting area. Never in my experience have I seen an ambulance arrival be placed in the general waiting area. My in-law told me they had been waiting there for around 2 hours.  We sat patiently waiting for 4 1/2 hours, at which point I had to leave.  During that time we saw many seemingly able bodied people go through into ED to be processed, causing distress to my in-law.

Around 4 hours into my in-law's arrival, we raised a concern about their diabetes, with them not having eaten or drunk since that morning, we were told their BSL was 12.7 on arrival, and that was it, no sugar recheck. We understood the need for fasting until being reviewed, but we also knew as the more dehydrated my in-law got the more confused they would become.  A relative stayed on with them for a further 2 hours (close to midnight), at which point staff were unable to tell them when they would be seen, not even a slight guess.

Their relative took the initiative to take my in-law to another hospital instead - they were seen within 30 minutes of their arrival.

What is happening at Joondalup? I found the communication was lacking, I recall there were at least 2 other people waiting who it seemed were quite poorly who I believe had been waiting in excess of 7 hours.  Most importantly to my relative and I, we felt our parent was largely being ignored, except for one dose of panadol and a pulse and oxygen saturation observation.

Can you please give me a reason why we should place our confidence in Joondalup health campus again?

Dear Parentsguardians

Thank you for taking the time to let me know of your experience whilst attending the Emergency Department (ED) at Joondalup Health Campus (JHC). Patient stories provide JHC Executive the opportunity to improve health care to our community and guide service improvement.

I am saddened and disappointed to hear that we were not able to meet the needs of your family member when presenting to our ED.

Our ED has experienced high levels of overcrowding in recent weeks. The ED and hospital executive are working hard to try and improve the overcrowding levels experienced and continue to work on a daily basis with the multidisciplinary teams in the hospital, to try and free up beds on the wards, which ultimately assists in reducing the waiting time in the ED.

All patients that arrive at the ED are assessed by an experienced triage nurse and a score, called the Australasian Triage Score (ATS) is given. This score is an internal scoring system to rate the urgency of care required. Depending on how seriously unwell the patients are, they may be moved immediately in to the ED if there is a life threating situation, remain with the ambulance crew until an appropriate bed is available, or allocated to the waiting room. In addition there are different pathways that a patient may be seen within the ED, including an area equipped and staffed for minor emergencies and injuries and a dedicated paediatric area. For this reason some people in the waiting room may be seen before others.

I can understand your clinical concerns in relation to your in-law's diabetes and agree that communication should have been better on this occasion. Please be reassured that we have staff present in the waiting room to monitor for deterioration.

As your local hospital we continue to strive to meet the expectations of the community.

If you would like to discuss your experience further with us, I encourage you to contact the Consumer Liaison Office on 08 9400 9672 or email consumerliaison.jhc@ramsayhealth.com.au

Once again please accept our apologies.

Kind regards

Mary Ferrier
