"The Breastfeeding Centre"

About: King Edward Memorial Hospital / Breastfeeding Centre of WA

(as the patient),

I recently had my first baby. Unfortunately, I had a traumatic birth lasting 36 hours ending in an non-elective c-section. Because of this, despite my daughter being very interested in latching onto my breast, my milk supply was almost non-existent when I left hospital.

The Lactation Consultant visited me on the ward before I was discharged and organised for me to hire a breast pump that was the same model I had been shown how to use in hospital for me to take home. I continued using the pump at home and with some guidance my milk supply slowly started to build.

At that point I needed some further assistance with breastfeeding and fortunately the Breastfeeding Centre runs a daily online class, which I found immensely helpful. Unfortunately then my milk supply plateaued so I organised an appointment at the Breastfeeding Centre. Over several appointments I was guided on my breastfeeding technique, medication that would help boost my milk supply, pumping regimes and so on. Furthermore, between appointments I was able to speak to someone at the Breastfeeding Centre if I had any concerns or questions. I am now almost 7 weeks post-birth and still working to increase my milk supply. Despite this, I would never have persisted as long as I have, especially with triple feeding for weeks, without the amazing support and encouragement of all the staff at the Breastfeeding Centre. I know breast milk is best, it’s an amazing creation but the reality is that breastfeeding is hard, it has certainly been a constant uphill battle for me and if the Breastfeeding Centre didn’t exist I would have given up breastfeeding shortly after I left hospital. I’m grateful that all their hard work has helped support me to support my daughter’s growth and development.
