"Covid-19 RAT Testing"

About: Broome Health Campus Broome Health Campus / Medical Imaging

(as the patient),

I recently attended Broome Hospital for an X-ray. Upon entering the hospital I needed a RAT test - I was told this on the time of confirming my appointment over the phone.

While the people who attended to me were pleasant enough, there was an absolute minimum of communication.

The only words spoken by the person doing the test was “please take down your mask”. Next thing I knew, there was a swab pushed into my nose.

Having a RAT performed by someone else is quite uncomfortable. A simple greeting, a brief explanation and asking permission would have made me feel more comfortable. I think other people, who are perhaps more vulnerable, could be even more affected by the lack of communication.

Furthermore, why can’t we self test on arrival? This would be preferable for me, as I am well aware of how to do the test with the many products.

In my opinion, the lay out of the testing area is also awkward. For me, trying to leave the area is difficult when other people are trying to enter through a small walkway where the security guard is also sitting. Social distancing is not possible on arrival or exit of the area.

Thanks to the staff in Xray who were professional and explained all procedures thoroughly.

Dear cricketk63

Thank you very much for taking the time to give us feedback, we regret that the RAT testing part of the experience was not a positive one.

Each week we perform hundred’s of RAT tests and have become very familiar with the process, and this can sometimes lead to lack of communication which you have unfortunately experienced. I will remind our RAT testing staff (including myself) to be mindful of the way we communicate.

I understand the frustration of not being able to undertake the RAT test for yourself. Unfortunately not everyone is able to accurately undertake a RAT test which can lead to false results. For this reason all tests are undertaken by the RAT testers (this process includes our own staff members who come in as patients) to ensure the reliability of the tests.

We also acknowledge your concern regarding the testing layout and the size of the walkway. This walkway is unfortunately the only entry into the area, and we are managing as best we can with the resources that we have. I will however pass on your concern to hospital management.

Yours sincerely

Lesley Nieuwoudt.
