"Lack of medical care"

About: Geraldton Hospital / Outpatient Services

(as the patient),

I have undiagnosed gastroparesis (I'm on the waitlist to get a endoscopy and colonoscopy because my doctors seemingly refuse to order a gastric emptying study). I have lost 17kg (15-20% of my body weight) in 6-7 months and my dietitian is the only one who seems concerned, I feel none of my doctors or specialists share the same concerns.

I am showing some scary signs of being malnourished and can barely function with daily life. I believe my doctors and specialists have been doing nothing and actually congratulate me on loosing weight. I just need someone to help me get access to the nutrition I desperately need as I am only able to eat one small meal a day but because my doctors see me, in my opinion, as 'overweight', they wont do anything and tell me I am starving myself and I just need to eat even though it just doesn’t work that way. I feel I should not fight this hard to achieve my human rights of proper nutrition.

Thanks.

Dear bluedd38

I am sorry to read of your ongoing health challenges and I am glad you have reached out to us both on Care Opinion and directly, so we can work towards providing you with the support and help you need.

Our medical team and I would like to meet with you so that we can learn from you how best to support you. My name is Derek Fraser and I am the Operations Manager at Geraldton Hospital. If you are happy to, please call me on 08 9956 2369 or email me at derek.fraser@health.wa.gov.au and we will arrange a time to meet.

So that you are aware Geraldton Hospital, along with all other hospitals in the Midwest, has an escalation process in place to support patients and their families and carers if they feel that their own or their loved one’s health is deteriorating. This process is called Aishwarya’s CARE Call and enables the caller to speak with a senior member of staff who will listen to the concerns and seek advice and support for you or your loved one. You may notice in our Emergency Department posters about Aishwarya’s CARE Call. If you are concerned about the care you or your family are receiving in hospital in the future, I encourage you to make a CARE Call on 1800 316 729. If you want to learn more about Aishwarya’s CARE Call, you can visit: WA Country Health Service - Aishwarya’s CARE Call

Thank you for reaching out to us and I do hope we hear from you soon.

Yours sincerely

Derek Fraser
