"COVID-19 rules preventing partners from attending appointments"

About: Broome Health Campus / Medical Imaging

(as a service user),

I was contacted to book in my 13 week scan (end of trimester) about two weeks before the appointment and I asked if my partner could attend. I was advised to call back on the day. We both had COVID-19 within 5 weeks, the hospital tests on arrival and you eat a mask the entire time you're in the hospital, yet still on the day of my scan I was advised that protocols meant my partner could not attend.

There are no mandated rules in WA for this. The people making these rules need to understand the impacts of not being able to attend these important appointments. This is also at complete odds with what it seems is allowed in the Broome hospital with two parents being able to attend emergency with a child and many other reports of carers and parents attending appointments.

This is not just my baby but my partner's as well. I feel it places increased burden on already stressed first time mothers and removes the other parent from the picture, I found leading to impacts on mental health and wellbeing.

I believe this should be reconsidered ASAP.

Dear Firsttimemum22

Thank you for sharing your feedback about your experience.

First of all, congratulations on your pregnancy. I understand that you were disappointed and frustrated that you were unable to attend the ultrasound with your partner.

Like all public hospitals, we have had to follow the WA Health visitor guidelines directives – which is directing us to not have visitors/partners in radiology appointments. We do very much empathise with all our patients not having partners for the ultrasounds.

We are currently able to provide exemptions (as required) to allow a partner or a support person in for the ultrasounds. Please contact us to apply for the exemption prior to your next appointment.

I hope you get to enjoy your next scan with your partner and best wishes for the remainder of your pregnancy.

Best regards

Joanne King
