"Offering assistance"

About: Albany Health Campus / Paediatrics

(as the patient),

I took my toddler for an X-ray on leg fracture. All nurses and x-ray tech I dealt with were very polite friendly and caring of my child. However, while wrestling a toddler who couldn't walk, a backpack and another young child on my own, I was not once offered help with carrying things or a wheelchair to move my child in and out of the waiting room to other rooms for check ups the x-ray rat test etc each time I felt I clearly struggled but wasn't offered help or a chair. Other than that the care was a great experience.

We were taken through to X-ray by a staff member who, in my opinion, was rude, walked ahead, didn't speak to us directly. They told us directions then walked off ahead leaving us in the corridor not knowing where we were going. When we reached the waiting area for x-ray they called behind to just sit and wait there, while still looking ahead and walking away. They did not indicate where exactly ‘there’ was so we sat on some chairs we hoped were the right ones. I was displeased with their lack of communication and care and would hope that no one is treated the way we were by them.

Dear Patient123456

Thank you for sharing your story on Care Opinion. I am very sorry that you had this experience of staff treating you rudely and no-one offering assistance when you were clearly struggling with a toddler with a broken leg, another young child and a backpack. We can do better and we are here to support all patients and visitors. We will share your story with the hospital’s executive team and at our weekly team briefing emphasising the importance of simple kindness to our patients and their families.

I hope that your toddler is now recovering and please do not hesitate to ask for help if you need it in the hospital.

Yours sincerely

Jenny Thompson

Director
