"My elderly parent isolation ward"

About: Prince of Wales Hospital / DB4 - Respiratory Medicine and Infectious Diseases Ward

(as a carer),

My parent was brought in to ER with chest and breathing issues thinking covid, they suffer with ‘emphysema! I’m my parent’s caregiver! Had no issue letting me stay in the Emergency for two days the staff were amazing!

Once moved to the isolation ward downstairs! I’m absolutely shocked with how they made a very big issue with me staying overnight with seemingly no compassion, not thinking bout my parent’s mental health, told me to leave, watching my parent cry, breathing difficult, I believe one of the nurses was horrible! I felt they didn’t care. I’ve seen the difference of having a loved one with my parent then not. Compassion, care is important in a hospital, family is important to their recovery their well being. I believe that being in such a locked up environment with no one, helps no one.

Thankfully the day staff are amazing with my parent. The Num through the day can’t complain, amazing, understood the situation! In my opinion, the elderly need a family member there for support, I found the lack of support for a patient is amazing from some staff! By a few days of staying here with my parent I recall again the issue arose. I felt it wasn’t necessary to put stress again on my old parent bout me staying after all documents said otherwise.

Based on my experience, please take every case and asses it before making a decision and put unnecessary stress on people and families. Read their file help and for god sake let a family member help. I believe rules need to change. Covid is around yes but I worry more will die lonely when they don’t have to. Language difference, mental health issues is important take it into consideration, please I can’t stress it enough. 😞
