"Waiting time in the ED"

About: Esperance Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

My child year old got hit with a hockey ball on their thumb while playing sports.

Nail is blue and finger very swollen. At the time of writing this story, we had been waiting for 3.5 hours and were not even next in line yet. My child is in pain. Only 1 doctor on apparently today. In my opinion, this is unacceptable!

Dear Sick of a bad medical service,

Thank you for providing feedback about your recent experience attending the Esperance Health Campus Emergency Department (ED) with your child. As a parent I can understand your frustration in experiencing an extended wait time, but I do hope that once you were in the ED the medical care that your child received was the very best.

The ED use the triage system to make complex assessments about a person’s presenting condition, whilst also considering many other factors, such as the patient’s observations and any risk of loss of consciousness. This is to ensure any life-threatening conditions are dealt with as a priority. We have had a couple of weekends where we have experienced increased presentations to the ED which, at times, can mean a longer wait than would usually be expected for some patients. We should be communicating this information with our patients and their families, I apologise that this was not your experience and I will ensure that we follow this up with our clinical staff.

The Esperance Health Campus provides 24/7 medical care to the Community and is currently staffed with highly skilled ED General Practitioner Proceduralists as well as a nurse practitioner and we have an overlap shift if no nurse practitioner is rostered on, along with a great team of nursing and support service staff.

I would like to thank you for sharing your experience with us and I do apologise for the wait that you experienced. If you would like to discuss your concerns further please contact our Senior Medical Practitioner Dr Annette Hackett on 9079 8000. I hope your child has made a full recovery and is back on the hockey field.

Kind regards
