"Injury"

As I sit here in emergency supporting my husband who nearly chopped his finger off, I’m reminded of the time I was here a year ago.

I was 10 days post partum with a huge belly and a rash on my legs and tummy. After a short wait in emergency, bloodwork showed my kidneys were failing. Your hospital ensured I was visited by obstetrics, Professor George, gastro and urology to work out what was wrong. After finding a cut in my bladder and organs failing, I never once felt like I was not being looked after. I was away from my baby and although I had a tough recovery, your thoroughness ensured the problem was identified and my kidneys didn’t fail. I was only in my 30's. The young doctor from Urology stayed with me and although he was exhausted when I overheard him telling another doctor he overstayed his shift, he stayed because the demands of a hospital and patient needs must weigh up in a doctor and nurse's mind all the time.

Now here with my husband, he has been seen and cared for by a couple of staff already. Given the best advice possible and cared for in such a short time, I look around at all the patients in emergency and know, in my opinion, they are in the best care, that they are in the best hospital, and I’m hopeful for all other hospitals to be as thorough as Kogarah was for me.
