"Hospital Carpark"

About: Royal Perth Hospital

(as a friend),

For the past couple of years, I believe RPH have denied public access to the multi-storey hospital car park to the general public, reserving the carpark for staff badge holders only. This is a public hospital and public carpark, refusing entry to a public carpark seems wrong. In my experience, patients and visitors are redirected to find a car park in the nearby CBD, this adds additional time and, in my opinion, confusion to patients with many potentially turning up late to their appointment. In addition, many patients are attending hospital appointments due to illness or lack of mobility and, in my opinion, should not be expected to find their way from a nearby CBD carpark to the hospital. RPH please open the public carpark up for what I believe to be its intended use as a convenient carpark for public patients.

Dear pyxisgw96,

I appreciate you taking the time to contact us with your concerns and I am sorry to hear of the difficulties you have encountered with parking at Royal Perth Hospital.

I can advise that the multi-deck carpark is operational 24 hours, 7 days a week and does contain dedicated public parking car bays and staff car bays. Once the carpark has reached capacity, a ‘Carpark Full’ sign is displayed and no further patrons can be admitted until some of the bays become available again. The bays are continually monitored and as car bays become available, the sign is removed and patrons are allowed access again.

When no public bays are available, depending on the circumstances, patrons may be redirected to Carpark 1 off Wellington Street where there are designated set down and pick up bays giving easier access to Royal Perth Hospital, Carpark 5 on Goderick Street, or alternatively may be redirected to Pier Street carparks. It is acknowledged, that while all these carparks are in close proximity of the hospital, it can certainly be an inconvenience at times and I am sorry for any distress this may have caused you.

I have been assured by the Metropolitan Access and Parking Department (MAPD) that the multi-deck car park is being reviewed, monitored and managed on a daily basis. They encourage patrons with special circumstances to speak to the attendants to discuss their particular situation and the attendants will try to make every effort to accommodate.

I hope this information is helpful and we are always reviewing Care Opinion stories and other feedback that is instrumental in guiding service improvements.

Kind Regards,

Dr Lesley Bennett
