"Unprofessional treatment by the doctor"

About: Prince of Wales Hospital / PB4 - Eye Clinic

(as the patient),

Had an set appointment in the morning. It was my third visit to the Eye Clinic. Like last time, it was a very long wait – over an hour. Was waiting for an hour so I asked nurses why I was waiting so long. I was told they booked many people in the same slot which is why it’s a long wait. I was talking to nurse who was standing right next to the doctor. They then told me there were 3 more people in front of me.

I said I don’t understand how booking works as it is a long time.

So eventually, 20 minutes later doctor called my name. When I sat down in the chair and the doctor started examining my eye, in general it was quite painful and felt quite rough. I said can I have a break. The doctor didn't seem to listen but paused for a second then kept going.

Eventually the doctor sat me down and told me there are no changes, that there is still a build up of fluid in the eye and nothing more we can do at this time so we'll just monitor it.

I asked why this happened with my eye and the doctor said didn’t they explain it to you last time? I said no they didn’t.

The doctor told me it was because of a tear in my retina. I have no restrictions and to just keep living until I have any other problems.

I felt like the doctor was rushing for me. I asked if they could write it all down so I can talk to my GP. They doctor said they can’t do it today, I asked if it would be this week and they said they didn’t’ know.

I said that would like to discuss this with my GP and I said I will forget what the doctor said, but they said no I would not forget.

I explained that I would like a recent report of what is happening with my eye, that it’s my eye and it’s very important to me. They doctor said they didn’t know when it would happen, that they were very busy.

There was a medical student in the room the whole time. I asked the student to ask for somebody else to be present in the room. The medical student didn’t do anything so I went out to the front desk and for a second person to be present in the room.

As soon as the second person arrived, the doctor said they will send me the report today and that I need come back in 6 weeks for another check up. If something is going to happen with the eye, it will happen in next 6 weeks. This was the first time the doctor said this. They said to go to reception and make another appointment. I said that’s all I wanted. Some certainty about my eye and what the next steps were.

It hasn’t been a great experience at all. I feel I had to ask for some basic care. There was no compassion although the last 4 weeks have been very stressful for me as there was a risk of going blind in one eye. This doctor I believe acted very unprofessionally.
