"Hospital stay after birth"

About: Bunbury Hospital / Maternity

(as the patient),

I had my baby just before 37 weeks and just under 2.5kg. The birth itself was incredible and the midwives who were in there with me were amazing….but I felt the aftercare was pathetic. I was so desperate to breastfeed yet it seemed to me that no one could really be bothered or had the time to help me properly. I wasn’t allowed to leave hospital due to baby being just under 2.5kg, yet I didn’t have anyone check on me or my baby, even to do obs for my whole first day in there. I just got given formula and a syringe. I remember just crying and crying and no one caring. Based on this experience, I pray to god I don’t have to stay in there for my second child.

Dear plutowd58,

Thankyou for taking the time to provide feedback on your postnatal experience at Bunbury Hospital. I am truly sorry that we weren't able to provide you with the support and care that you required following the birth of your baby, and I am saddened to hear that you felt that no one cared.

We are currently developing a lactation consultant service that will provide breastfeeding support to mothers during their hospital stay. In addition we are supporting a number of midwives to undertake additional training in breastfeeding to ensure that they are practicing evidence based care.

My name is Katrina Jones and I am the Clinical Midwifery Manager at Bunbury. I would love the opportunity to speak to you directly in regards to your care at the Unit. This will also assist me in providing direct feedback to the staff members involved in your care. Please feel free to contact me via phone 9722 1348 or email katrina.jones2@health.wa.gov.au if you feel comfortable doing so..

I hope that you and bub are doing well and I hope to hear from you soon.

Katrina Jones.
