"Behavioural treatment during admission"

About: Perth Children's Hospital / Ward 4B - Long Stay Surgical

(as a parent/guardian),

A few weeks ago my child was due for admission onto Ward 4B. I made the phone call as instructed the morning of, so we could confirm admission time. The lady on the phone told me 2pm, sharp.

We are from the country so we packed up everything and set off arriving at PCH. We followed the instructions on how to get to Ward 4B. We approached the ward desk only to be told, there is not a bed available yet but within the next half an hour there will be. We were told to wait in the family lounge until then.

30 minutes came and went and we were still waiting. By this stage my child was so overwhelmed that they were upset. The head nurse on duty (they never introduced themselves) had come in and told us that there is still no bed for our child and that we should leave the ward and come back later. I then said that when I rang this morning the lady promised that there would be a bed waiting for us at 2pm. This nurse said well that is not my problem, that we don't have a bed ready. They came across very rude and left me visibly upset.

About 4pm the nurse came back and bluntly told us that there was a bed ready for my child and stormed off.

A male nurse then popped up and introduced himself and showed us to our room. When we got to our room, he looked at our paperwork and mentioned that because we were private patients that we should have been allocated a private room, over a two bed room. He pulled the head nurse aside and mentioned it and it seemed they snapped at him saying that we were being difficult and that is what they will be giving us, I believe they were unaware that we could hear them. This nurse also said that we can wait to receive our private health vouchers, to which I didn't receive until 7pm and it was too late to get any dinner and I was told that the hospital wouldn't give me any. Even though I asked a number of times for the vouchers.

The male nurse, Henery, was lovely and had a great bedside manner. I couldn't fault him. He made sure my child had everything they needed.

We also had Abby and Naomi as nurses and they were amazing. When my child woke at 1am and didn't want to go back to sleep, Abby was so helpful, even taking them for ward walks so I could get a little bit of sleep.

I can't thank Henery, Abby and Naomi enough. Their care was amazing and I couldn't fault it.

Dear camelopardalisje75,

Thank you for sharing your feedback about your experience regarding your child’s admission on Ward 4B at Perth Children’s Hospital (PCH).

I am so sorry to hear that after being advised that there would be a bed waiting for your child that this was not the case and you had to wait several hours in the family lounge to be admitted.

Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances patient discharges are sometimes delayed, and I apologise that this happened to you and your child on this occasion. Your feedback highlights the complexities faced by families living in regional locations and will be used to improve our services for patients and families as we strive to meet our consumer’s needs more effectively.

The experience you describe with the head nurse in communicating the delay of your bed would have been very upsetting and I apologise that you did not receive meal vouchers in timely fashion and were communicated in a way that was rude and left you feeling upset. This behaviour is not in line with the CAHS values of Accountability, Collaboration, Compassion, Equity, Excellence and Respect and I would encourage you to call the number below to discuss the matter further.

Thank you for your comments regarding Henry, Abby and Naomi they will be delighted to receive your feedback and it was a pleasure to read the care that you received during your admission from these staff was in line with our values.

Please contact our Consumer Engagement team if you have any further questions or would like to discuss the matter further on (08) 6456 0032 or at CAHSFeedback@health.wa.gov.au.

Kind regards

Louise Keyes
