"Child's blood test"

About: Perth Children's Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

I feel we waited for 3 hours in waiting room because of the age of my child and they also had Covid. We waited another 2 hours to have bloods done. And then waited 3 hours for the blood results to come back, in this time I checked with staff who said they were following up, but after 3 hours my child and I had had enough so I went to ask for a 3rd time when I believe it was a senior clinician at that time came out arms folded in front of me to tell me that they can’t locate the bloods and they had been lost, but if I waited for the next staff change over another 40 mins that they would sort it out.

At this point I was fuming but didn’t cause a scene as I understand everyone is understaffed at the moment so rather than say anything rude, I got my child and we walked out. I did call back later and a doctor advised me that they found the bloods and went through it with me. I could not fault the doctor who was helping us through the early hours of the that day.

The nurses were friendly, but did not deliver on a few occasions, I asked for another mask for my child as they were coughing so much it was soaking and it never came, as well as I was asked if I wanted a coffee but nothing came, I was not impressed with the service there at all, thinking it was the best place to have my child checked, but based on my experience I felt I should have just gone locally.

Dear Unicorn0000,

Thank you for sharing your feedback about your experience in our Emergency Department (ED) at Perth Children’s Hospital (PCH).

I am sorry that you had to wait so long in the Emergency Department for your blood results to be processed and did not receive a mask and or coffee when you asked for them. Having a sick child is stressful and having to wait for long periods can add to this stressful situation particularly when other needs are not being met.

The care that you describe is not in line with the Child and Adolescent Health Services’ values of Accountability, Collaboration, Compassion, Equity, Excellence and Respect and I apologise for this. We are currently providing all our Emergency Department staff with customer service training to further enhance patient and families experience when attending the Emergency Department.

Thank you for your positive feedback regarding the doctors that looked after your child and advised you of a course of action the following day after your presentation to the Emergency Department.

I trust your child has recovered now and wish you and your family all the best in the future.

Kind regards,

Louise Keyes

A/Nurse Co-Director Medicine PCH
