"My experience"

About: Royal Perth Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I will say the female RNs that I saw were amazing. However, I believe the people in charge were more worried about covid (of which I didn’t have). I was isolated in a tiny room and not allowed to see my partner for my whole time in emergency.

I am a sexual assault victim and I personally have been triggered by one of the male staff. I asked for a female, however, he just brought her into the room while he still did the test.

Further, the same male asked if I wanted to leave but then on my discharge papers stated that I refused to stay. Further more stating that I have a possible infection however I was never given any medication.

Dear idonotdeservethis,

I was deeply sorry to read your Care Opinion Story and learn of the trauma you endured unnecessarily when attending the Royal Perth Hospital Emergency Department (RPH ED).

Recognising the presence of trauma through trauma-informed care is vital in acknowledging the role it has played in your life, and for us to respond with the appropriate care and support. I would like to acknowledge that the situation you described was extremely distressing for you and your partner and would like to extend my sincere apologies.

It is difficult for me to comment further without knowing your particular details; however, if you feel comfortable, I would encourage you to contact the Consumer Engagement Unit on (08) 9224 1637, 8am to 4pm or email RPBG.feedback@health.wa.gov.au, so a full investigation can be completed and improvements made where necessary. I would also urge you to contact your General Practitioner so they may follow up any test results and medications if required.

We are committed to providing the highest quality of health care we can offer for our patients and I am sorry that in this instance you did not experience this.

Thank you for sharing your story on Care Opinion.

Kind regards

Dr Lesley Bennett
