"Staff interactions with us"

About: Geraldton Community Health Service

(as a parent/guardian),

Taking my young child in for their flu needle in Geraldton, we were welcomed by what seemed to be a nurse in a concierge role. Drew (the nurse) greeted us warmly and joyfully, giving out a pack of pencils and activity booklet for my child to do while we waited. He also sat with us and went through all the different options within the booklet and how to do them.

When we went in to get the needle, we had a nurse whose interactions I recall were very short and brief. I felt it would’ve been a nicer experience if they had spent a little bit of time talking to my child about what was going to happen etc. Being so young, my child had no recollection of what it’s like etc. Just asked me to hold my child and told them to look away. As expected the needle hurt but my child also bled a lot (because it was warm, I believe the nurse said), but they didn’t have a cotton wool ball or Band-Aid or anything ready, I had to wipe it away and put my finger on it while the nurse got one. My child was quite upset.

It seemed there was hardly any after care until we went back out and Drew tried multiple times going above and beyond to support us. Bringing cold napkins, a cup of water and even making a paper airplane to try and bring joy to my son. Thank you Drew, what a lovely experience at such a hard time!

Dear cyclonepc48

Thank you for sharing your experience on Care Opinion.

It is always a pleasure to read that one of our staff members showed compassion for our younger community members to ensure they are relaxed and ready for their vaccinations. Drew is a valued member of our vaccination team and it is no surprise to hear he supported you and your child in such an empathetic way.

I was concerned to read that some of your experience was not as comfortable as your interactions with Drew. I have requested the vaccination team review their practices to ensure they always have everything on hand that’s required to easily and safely administer vaccinations to our community.

Please be assured I have made Drew aware of your lovely feedback and I have added my appreciation for all he does to support our community.

Kind regards

Kumar Deep
