"Visiting a GP to confirm that I was pregnant"

About: GPs in the Swan Electoral District

(as the patient),

I was a week late for my period and I booked an appointment with a GP in my local area. I had only recently moved to Perth and did not have a family doctor. I sat down and told the Dr that I had nausea and I was late for my period and that I was quite certain I was pregnant. They asked how I knew and I told them that I had terminated two pregnancies. I believe they saw my age and began explaining that it's not the best to be having a baby after my age bracket because the science shows that babies born to parents older than 35 have a lower IQ. They drew a graph on a piece of paper that showed an axis for age of parent between 18 and 35 and the IQ was high and then at 35 the line dropped all the way down and was saying that my child would be unintelligent due to the quality of my eggs. I felt perplexed that any GP would start a pregnancy appointment like this.

I really should have walked out at that stage because it just got worse. They then went on to say that I shouldn't eat bagged salad because it has listeria in it and that my baby was at risk of spina bifida, including googling graphic pictures of babies with spina bifida.

I left feeling shame and guilt for falling pregnant at my age, wondering if I should terminate the pregnancy. As horrible as this interaction was for me I just couldn't help wondering how a younger version of me would have responded to that kind of treatment. I told my sibling who works for DHHS and they insisted I report the doctor but I didn't want to and I'm still not sure why. It felt like it would be too stressful to bring up those topics again. My child is almost 7 months old now, they are absolutely perfect and every health professional describes them as robust and advanced. Had I let this dr spook me enough maybe I would have never gotten to meet my child.
