"Midwife from ED gave us the best possible birth experience"

About: Bunbury Hospital / Maternity

(as a service user),

We arrived to the hospital in labour and entered through ED. That is where we met Sally who was quick to get us to the maternity ward. Once we were on the ward, nothing was really happening and we were told there were staff shortages. I got a bit anxious and panicky at this point and stopped feeling like I was coping well. We were put into a labour room and given no direction, assessment or reassurance.

Sally came up from her shift in ED and straight away took baby’s heart rate and said it was a happy baby and we were doing great. She gave me direction and suggestions for positions (which was a huge help because I couldn’t think well for myself) and lots of reassurance. I felt so much more comfortable instantly. About 2 hours after arriving, Sally delivered our baby. She made the world of difference to our birth experience and I’m so grateful. We can’t thank her enough.

Dear squathk85,

Thankyou for taking the time to provide feedback on your birthing experience at Bunbury Maternity unit. I am sorry that on your arrival to the department the ward staff did not settle you into the birthsuite and ensure that you were comfortable and reassured for your stay. I will discuss the importance of ensuring a welcoming and positive environment to all staff at our next ward meeting.

The hospital has a number of contingencies in place to be implemented at times of increased activity and the utilisation of Midwifery staff located in other departments, such as ED, ensures that we can provide safe and supportive care.

I am pleased that Sally returned to the Maternity ward and was able to provide you with the reassurance required and supported you through the birth of your baby. I will pass on your feedback to Sally, and I am certain that she will be grateful for your kind words and pleased that she was able to assist you as required.

Thankyou again for taking the time to provide us with feedback. And I wish you and your family well.

Katrina Jones
