"Prostate cancer"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital

(as the patient),

I was diagnosed with prostate cancer in late 2018. It was decided that I needed cancer surgery and I asked my doctor to refer me to Fiona Stanley as they had had robotic surgery there for about a year.

The press release from the health minister said that it was to provide that capability for all Western Australians. I believe that turned out to be a lie as Fiona Stanley seemingly refused to treat me and instead referred me to another hospital which could not do robotic surgery due to my medicare postcode. The excuse that they gave was that I needed urgent care which this other hospital should provide as I was out of the area, yet I work South of the River and FSH was not inconvenient. That was despite them sitting on the referral for months.

Instead of conventional surgery which I understand has a worse QOL outcome, I have opted to wait which in my opinion makes that excuse even more pitiful. To this day I still have not had surgery and live with the threat of spreading prostate cancer.

Dear airnh95,

I am sorry to hear of your diagnosis of prostate cancer in 2018. At this stage, Fiona Stanley Hospital (FSH) is the only public hospital in WA providing robotic surgery. The service commenced on Monday 22 October 2018 and, to ensure the safe implementation of this new technology, a staged approach to increasing capacity has been adopted.

FSH is now accepting all referrals regardless of postcode, and these are triaged and assessed appropriately by the clinical team. Could you please contact our Patient and Family Liaison team on 6152 4013 or FSHFeedback@health.wa.gov.au with your details to allow us to determine if further follow-up is required.

Kind regards,

Kellie Blyth
