"Hip replacement. No home help after opp. In despair after returning home."

About: Albany Health Campus / Surgical Ward

(as the patient),

Late last month I had hip replacement in Albany health campus hospital w.a. I asked many times whilst in the hospital & before going into hospital for a hip replacement if I could have help at home to be organised the day following my return home. I live alone. I was assured before going into hospital by the social worker & OT at the hospital that someone would come to see me whilst I was in hospital to arrange home help.

Nobody came to see me in hospital to arrange that. I asked several nurses, the Ot & physiotherapist to please get someone to see me whilst I was still in hospital to arrange home visits for me. Nobody could help me with that. Consequently I was at home on my own 3 days after the op, struggling with crutches, was not able to get food heated, prepare drinks, washing my self & often in despair & tears. Please can you make sure this never happens to anyone again.

Kind regards

Dear muscaky48,

My sincere apologies that services were not coordinated in preparation for your discharge to your home following your hip replacement. It sounds like you had a very difficult time struggling to look after yourself while on crutches and I am so sorry that you felt such despair that you were frequently in tears.

But I am also a little surprised by your experience as the Albany Hospital Allied Health team normally works extremely well in partnership with our patients in hospital. We discuss home setup and service requirements prior to discharge to ensure that our patients are well set up in the community, and able to manage the first few weeks on their own or with necessary community services in place to support their recovery journey.

I would very much like to understand what has happened to you so we can ensure that this does not happen again. Please contact me directly; Joanne Clark, Coordinator of Allied Health Services Albany Hospital, on 9892 2464, so I can investigate further to get a better understanding in how we failed to address your needs.

Many thanks for bringing this to my attention and I hope that you are recovering now with the support that you need.
