"Partner not allowed in room for pregnancy ultrasound"

About: Broome Health Campus / Medical Imaging

(as the patient),

I had an ultrasound at Broome hospital recently. It was an appointment to confirm pregnancy. I had experienced bleeding and cramping in the days and weeks prior, so I was nervous, and of course wanted my partner in the room. Unfortunately due to WACHS protocol they were denied.

I feel this is absolute rubbish. My partner is allowed in the hospital, in the waiting area, but not in the room. I question where the logic is, WACHS. It was very disappointing for both of us. It is their unborn child too, and I believe both parents should be allowed. I feel it is an outdated rule from when covid was 'in it's peak' and I believe should be removed immediately. In my opinion, it is denying fathers/mothers of hopefully what should be precious moments.

Dear The.sad.patient,

Thank you for sharing your feedback about your experience.

Congratulations on you pregnancy. I understand that you feel disappointed and frustrated that your partner was unable to attend the ultrasound with you.

Like all public hospitals in WA, we have to follow the WA Health Visitor Guidelines Directives – which is directing us to not have visitors/partners in radiology appointments. We do very much empathise with all our patients not having partners for their ultrasounds.

We are currently able to provide exemptions (as required) to allow a partner or support person in for the ultrasounds. Please contact us to apply for the exemption prior to your next appointment.

I hope you get to enjoy your next scan with your partner and best wishes for the remainder of your pregnancy.

Best regards,

Joanne King
