"My experience in the E.D"

About: Bunbury Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I visited the ED recently and upon entering was asked to complete a Covid-19 form. I did this and handed it to the nurse and then proceeded to wait at least an hour to even be asked why I was there and what the issue was (triage). The nurse was under so much pressure as this area was packed. They seemingly had no assistance until later on when other nurses came out asking the patients, I recall, who's next?

It seemed no-one was being triaged and categorised in most urgent/less urgent. I brought this up with a nurse and then heard, who's next?, again. In my opinion, this isn't the way to triage. If there was an emergency, I believe staff would never know until at least one hour on the day I presented. I clearly was in alot of pain. It seemed it wasn't only me getting frustrated. Another patient even stood up for me and helped me. Please change this system for the public's health.

On numerous occasions I had to advise staff that I'd already had painkillers (was offered them). Lucky I kept track.

I'm relieved my visit wasn't the emergency I thought it was as I'm not sure the department would've coped.

Dear eridanustk46,

I am very sorry to hear about your recent presentation to the Bunbury Emergency Department. Thank you for bringing your triage experience to my attention. We have processes in place for both managing surges in presentation numbers and for identifying triage priorities.

I would very much like to review the day you presented to our ED to identify why our processes did not work as they should have. If you feel comfortable please email us at: SWfeedback@health.wa.gov.au or call us on 08 9722 1521. If you wish to remain anonymous you can do so.

I am pleased to hear that your presentation was not as urgent as you initially suspected and I do hope you are now feeling much better.

Kind regards,

Amber Hargans
