"Post implant of SICD"

About: St George Hospital / 5 West Cardiology

(as the patient),

I was admitted for an implant of a Subcutaneous Implantable Cardiac Defribulator by Dr Andrew. It was to be an overnight stay with expected discharge on the following day. All went well with the surgery and I was moved to ward 5W for recovery. The staff there were very nice and friendly and professional. Despite being extremely busy and under associated pressure the nurses remained attentive and nothing seemed like too much trouble.

I was in a lot of pain on the second day and it was decided that I remain another night. I requested more pain management and there was the usual hassle of trying to get a DR to visit to write something up. But that wasn't the nurses fault. The next morning I was seen by the Cardio team again and it was left to me to either stay longer or go home that day. I decided to go home.

There was a particularly softly spoken young nurse who did very well with calming some anxiety I had from the awful pain. And also a student nurse who was very friendly and had a wonderful personality. The food was nice, and I even scored a couple of flavored milks :) Overall, it was good to be well looked after in such a highly-paced environment. Well done Ward 5.

Hi Angela,

You're most welcome. I always give credit where it is due. And in this instance I felt it was deserving and warranted.

As an ex-nurse myself (from many years ago) I have a good insight into how demanding the job can be, and staff often feel under-appreciated, but they battle on because they want to help people in times of need.

Thank you for passing on my feedback, and if it brings a smile to even one staff member then that is wonderful:)

Kind regards

Pookie
