"Obstetric based scan"

About: Broome Health Campus / Medical Imaging

(as the patient),

Deeply disappointed with the current Covid-19 blanket regulations in WA Health that disallow supporting partners to be present during obstetric based scans. We were given minimal information on this and told at the last minute that 'It was too late and to try an exemption for next time'. Thankfully, we were able to speak with Jo, the head of radiology, who was exceptionally understanding and able to support a one-off exemption for my partner to be present.

I have since had to provide a series of supporting documents in my application for an exemption.

We were not requested to take a RAT test, or to show evidence of vaccinations and my partner was allowed to sit in the waiting room where others were not wearing masks. However, he was not initially provided permission to be present in the scan, nor would we have been allowed to video call during this time. I feel it is an illogical situation where other aspects of the hospital are accessible for all.

Dear Empathymg36,

Thanks for your feedback regarding your partner not being allowed to attend your antenatal ultrasound appointment.

I understand your sense of disappointment and frustration about this situation. We should have made you aware of this when you made your appointment and I apologise that this didn’t happen.

The decision to restrict the number of people in small examination rooms was made by WA Health to reduce the risk of COVID transmission. Broome Hospital is bound by this decision and we are seeking to have this directive reviewed.

For future appointments please get in touch with us beforehand and we can arrange an exemption so that your partner can attend.

Once again I apologise that this situation arose and I wish you well for the rest of your pregnancy and the safe arrival of your baby.

Regards

Duncan Thorn

Acting Senior Medical Imaging Technologist
