"I went to chest x ray"

About: Broome Health Campus / Medical Imaging

(as the patient),

Hi there, thanks for reading. Here is the thing, I went to clinic to do my physical examination and had a chest x ray in the hospital. I know there should be no metal things in bra when we doing the X ray. So I prepared a sports one in case. However, I got refused from a doctor or assistant who said to me better to change even I explained what I was wearing. That wasn’t happen before when I did two years ago in another hospital. Eventually I changed and I entered the operation room, there was 2 man standing including the one guiding me…

To be honest, I felt bit uncomfortable although I knew it was in hospital I needed to show my respect to their work. I think they were doing their best to finish their work but the procedure need to be improved because seems not care about the people especially the female properly.

If possible, please let the worker know that sportswear would not influence the result of the x ray and same gender staff even just one would be better in that situation. I just don’t want another one sitting on awkward position like me.

Hope my word could express myself well.

Dear inspirezy63,

Thanks for your feedback regarding your experience for your chest xray appointment.

Although a sports bra is usually ok to wear during a chest xray, sometimes they can be seen on the xray and may cover up important parts of the image. When this happens it is necessary to repeat the xay which exposes the patient to more radiation which has a small risk associated with it. Best (and safest) practice is to remove all clothing for an xray and for the patient to wear a gown. I can reassure you that getting changed for your examination and wearing a gown is 100% appropriate.

We sometimes have two staff members working in the same room to make the patient journey as fast and safe as possible, I am sorry that this made you feel uncomfortable. We will always meet requests for patients to be attended by staff of female gender when requested if it is possible. I will remind all staff of the importance of always making sure that the modesty of female patients is preserved.

Thanks for taking the time to get in touch with us to raise your concerns.

Regards

Duncan Thorn
