My teenage son had a spontaneous pneumothorax and was transferred to PCH via RFDS as we live in a small town outside of Perth. The care he received from the beginning to the end of his stay was incredible. Every nurse that attended him was professional and kind.
He had an operation and recovered quickly. We found Dr John and his registrar were so good at communicating and doing some great surgery, and thanks to the Anaesthetists for good post op analgesia. The staff we encountered were all keen to learn and quickly sought expert opinion if they were unsure on things and we felt very reassured by the ICU staff coming to help.
Everyone we saw was so friendly and calm. We were so impressed by the building and its design, the way you could close the door to keep out noise, the blinds that worked, the sofa bed that was really comfy, the shower and toilet ensuite - all brilliant. We felt the volunteers were brilliant too, keeping my son entertained and being kind to me in the coffee area downstairs! They also helped with the laundry (essential- so grateful I could get clean clothes) and helped with our bags on our way home.
My son had an amazing view over King's Park which made everything better. We even got to watch a crow making a nest and feeding its babies in the pine tree outside the window, a great distraction. I lost the bit of paper that I wrote the names of the nurses down who my son particularly liked, but you will know who you are.
Thank you every one of you, you made a stressful time not quite so awful, and even fun at times. Seeing other kids in worse states and hearing what you all have to do (even with the door shut we could hear a few "exciting" episodes) puts everything in perspective. I believe you all do an amazing job, well done.
