"My mum’s time in Wonthaggi Hospital."

About: Wonthaggi Hospital / Acute Ward

(as a relative),

Mum was admitted into the Emergency department with a suspected UTI. I was in Melbourne, so quite worried about her. My sister went to see mum the next day and was extremely impressed by the friendly, helpful staff.

Mum was admitted to the acute ward a couple of days later and I visited her on the following day and the day after. I was blown away by the friendliness of the staff, beginning with the security guard in the car park who helped me find a park to the nursing staff and doctors. It was clearly a busy few days but despite this, the staff were professional, friendly and caring. The kitchen staff spoke nicely to all the patients in mum’s ward, checking what they would like for lunch and asking how each patient was. Just taking that couple of seconds to provide that personal touch. The lady opposite mum was incapacitated due to their shoulder and when I offered to help them with their lunch, the patient said no as they knew the nursing staff would help them. I recall there was an elderly patient who was clearly hard of hearing, yet all the staff who spoke to them were respectful and did their utmost to address them by their correct name.

My mum felt very well cared for and was happy for me to leave her because she said the nurses were so lovely. As were the doctors who answered my questions on the day.

The pharmacy staff were also most helpful and clearly explained mum’s medication on her discharge.

The entire time I was with mum, the feel of the hospital was one of positivity and the staff couldn’t do enough to help out. Unfortunately, I cannot remember the names of the nurses other than Emily (I believe it was her first day at the hospital) but they were all wonderful.

On behalf of my mum and myself, our sincerest thanks for the professional, friendly, care provided.

Regards,

My mother (patient) and tucanawy49

Dear tucanawy49,

Thank you for taking the time to provide our staff with feedback about your experience. I know they will be really happy to read your post. Our teams have been extremely busy over the past months, and despite the day to day challenges, they continue to provide skilled and expert care, with compassion and kindness, because this is their hospital, and they are all very proud to care for their community. I hope your mother is doing well.

Kind Regards, Jan
