"Leg collapsed on holiday"

About: Geraldton Hospital / Emergency Department Kalbarri Health Centre / Emergency Department St John Ambulance WA

(as the patient),

Holidaying in Kalbarri with my sons and my leg collapsed after walking downstairs at our accommodation. I was not aware there was an ED so my son carried me back to the unit whilst I wondered how to access care. I researched if any GPs in Kalbarri and found the 24hr ED service so I called and spoke to Ian I think his name was, who advised me to call ambulance.

The local volunteer ambos were fabulous and found a way to get me  down the stairs and relieve my pain.

I was attended immediately in the ED, given pain relief, reassured and xrayed and made comfortable for the transfer to Geraldton ED. These guys were great can I please offer my thanks for their care and kindness from ambulance service and Kalbs ED.

I was abit worried moving to Geraldton ED... Thinking surely it can't be as good as Kalbarri... but it was!! ... I was handed over smoothly attended to immediately despite being extremely busy with many demanding and unwell patients.. the staff remained cool calm and collected. The Dr straight away noticed I had also broken my foot, the foot was xrayed and my leg CT scanned straight away and very quickly the orthopaedics team attended to discuss my treatment plan of emergency surgery.

I was offered a transfer to a hospital closer to home in Mandurah and access surgery faster but I said no can I please stay here for treatment (because based on my experience, I felt Perth hospitals are not this good). He said yes ofcourse just will take a day to order the parts but I was happy to wait. I was admitted to the ward. I would be discharged in 1 or 2 days. My surgery went well. All of the staff there... the PCAs, the nurses, the radiology staff, the doctors, physio, OT, the cleaners have displayed a high level of respect and compassion and first class care. I wish I could remember everyone's names to thank them individually but this applies to anyone who has cared for me, it's for all of you... Thankyou... You have made a very traumatic experience tolerable and I will never forget the care I received there.

Dear Nursing19,

Thank you for taking the time to write to us and share your experience.

It was so pleasing to read your story describing the many healthcare teams that worked together ensuring you were well looked after and making your patient experience tolerable through a time that must have been very stressful.

The patient experience, safety and wellbeing are very important to us and I am glad that the ambulance service, Kalbarri Health Service and the various teams at Geraldton Hospital were able to provide such patient centred care throughout your journey.

Thank you so much for acknowledging the excellent care you received, and it will give me great pleasure to pass your kind words on to each of the teams.

I hope you are continuing to recover from your injuries and thank you again for sharing your story on Care Opinion.

Kind regards,

Jody Rolston
